A striking number of new brands

50 kWh, 60 kWh, 75 kWh… these are all everyday values when it comes to the battery capacity of electric cars. Of course, larger cars also have larger battery packs, but these five really pack a punch. Striking: new brands account for four of the five cars on the list!
The Chinese Nio recently announced that it will also offer battery packs of 150 kWh in the Netherlands. The brand has not yet said in which model this will happen, but that is probably not that important with Nio. After all, Nio is the brand for battery changing, so you will probably be able to have this mega-large battery pack hoisted at a swapping station into a model of your choice, provided there is room for it in that model. This also applies to the 75 kWh and 100 kWh batteries that Nio currently offers.
With 150 kWh, Nio would be the leader on the European market when it comes to large battery packs. The brand even has a considerable lead over number 2, although the 123 kWh battery of the Vinfast VF9 is also impressive. When compiling the list below, we kept one eye on our own Carbase database, and the other on that of the unsurpassed EV-Database. The condition for a place in the top 5 was that the car was either available in the Netherlands or became available. Numbers 1 and 2 are in the last category, the rest should already be available. The battery value that you see in the right column is, if available, the net capacity and the maximum that is available in the relevant model. Smaller batteries are also available in all models mentioned.
Striking: except Mercedes, all brands on the list are new to the European market. We already mentioned Nio from China and Vinfast from Vietnam, but the American Lucid and the Chinese Hongqi are also only just coming to Europe. Outside Europe, EV manufacturers are making things a little more colorful in this area. You guessed it: it’s mainly about America. The rather bizarre Hummer EV, for example, has more than 200 kWh on board. A slightly smaller American almost made it to second place on this list, because the Ford F-150 Lightning is also available in Europe with 131 kWh. For the time being, this only applies to Norway and Switzerland, so we will keep it an honorable mention.
Brand | Fashion model | Max. battery capacity | |
1 | Nio | nnb | 150 kWh |
2 | Vinfast | VF9 | 123 kWh |
3 | Lucid | Air | 118 kWh |
4 | Hongqi | E-HS9 | 112 kWh |
5 | Mercedes Benz | EQS | 108 kWh |
Big is not always far
A large battery certainly helps when it comes to range, but is no guarantee of a long driving range. This became apparent when we recently spent a week in the Netherlands with the Hongqi E-HS9, and recorded a consumption of around 40 kWh per 100 km (!). The rest may not be as colorful, especially the economical Lucid. Anyone who wants to know which EVs have the greatest range should definitely look here.
