The Dutch Lightyear, which develops electric cars that can be charged directly with sunlight, will supply 5,000 cars to LeasePlan. It is the company’s first major order.
Lightyear is making great strides this year. The Dutch company, which is preparing a first production model with the One, announced the production start of the One, attracted €93 million in investments and showed an impressive driving range of the One in a field test. The year is almost over, but at the last minute there is still a huge milestone for the car manufacturer. LeasePlan orders 5,000 cars from Lightyear.
LeasePlan will eventually receive 5,000 copies of Lightyear’s second model. A model that has not yet been revealed, but should appear on the market around 2024 or 2025. Not much is known about this car yet, except that it should be much cheaper than the One with which it will share a lot of technology. At the beginning of 2020, it was indicated that €50,000 is the price that Lightyear is targeting, but that has now been reduced even further to a starting price of €30,000. It will be the model that will ensure the large sales numbers. In any case, the first 5,000 have already been forgiven. LeasePlan will also include the Lightyear One in its fleet before that time.
The Lightyear One is an EV that generates extra electricity thanks to solar panels. This should of course greatly improve the range of the car. The One recently proved that, by being able to cover 710 km on a test track before the battery was empty. Of course, you cannot save such a range with daily use, and the Lightyear One’s undoubtedly very decent WLTP range will soon be known.
