LiveWire S2 Del Mar recall: powertrain may fail

LiveWire has issued a recall for the S2 Del Mar. Due to an error in the VSC (Vehicle Supervisory Controller) software, a powertrain shutdown can be initiated, causing the engine to stall.

LiveWire S2 Del Mar recall: powertrain may fail

On December 15, 2023, Harley-Davidson’s electric subsidiary, LiveWire, received an initial report of an S2 Del Mar that unexpectedly stalled while driving, prompting an investigation by the TSC Technical Subcommittee on January 22, 2024. During that investigation, two additional reports were identified that were possibly related to the VSC.

The TSC concluded on February 2 that the cause was indeed related to the VSC’s software. When internal software voltage thresholds are exceeded, powertrain shutdown is initiated, without giving the rider any indication before initiating the shutdown procedure.

The engine may not restart while driving. Unexpected loss of drive while driving without the ability to restart can increase the risk of an accident.

On February 6, 2024, LiveWire released a Firmware Over the Air (FOTA) update to provide a new calibration that resolves this issue and some motorcycles in the recall population have already been updated. Owners will be notified by post and asked to contact the dealer where the new software will be installed.
