The greening of the vehicle fleet is progressing at a rapid pace and the increasing sales of new electric cars is good news for the used car market. Because slowly but surely plug-in cars are becoming more affordable. We focus our attention on an electric city rascal that can cost a maximum of €15,000.
The newest
Smart EQ ForTwo
€13,950
2018
28,233 km
This mischievous Smart ForTwo is the starting point in our search for an affordable car that runs on electricity. On paper he comes out well, because he is the cheapest, the newest and has driven the fewest kilometers of the three. Reason for a party? That depends on how the next owner uses the little Smart. With a battery capacity of 17.6 kWh, it is certainly not a mileage tiger. In practice, the jab is finished after about 100 kilometers. Once connected to the charging plug, the small Smart is recharged at a maximum of 22 kW per hour. Not all that great, but as a shopping car it comes into its own and there is a smooth-looking car in front of the door for a relatively modest amount.
Mandatory number
Fiat 500E
€14,885
2016
54,875 km
This small Fiat carries the smaller ‘American’ number plates on the front and back. How about that? This electric version of the 500 was supplied in California only to comply with local laws that require automakers to offer electric vehicles as well. This white specimen has worn its first years on the other side of the large lake and made the crossing to our little country two years ago. With its 24 kWh battery on board, it can travel 150 kilometers according to the manufacturer, but in practice feel free to subtract a few tens of kilometers. So also for this little Italian American: use it for what it is intended for. For short city trips, this is an excellent car that is still very popular with a large target group.

Volkswagen e-Up
€14,900
2014
41,331 km
Although the smallest member of Volkswagen has been driving around since 2011, the electric variant only made its appearance in 2014. With this shiny black copy we have an early copy from that year. You can’t tell from the photos that this is an Up with eight years of life experience, because it looks like new. The small Volkswagen is painted in business black, but the red piping on the back with the sleek 15-inch alloy makes it complete in our opinion. Things like cruise control, heated seats and parking sensors make this a very complete car within the segment and with the 19 kWh battery, the Up should be good for a theoretical range of 133 kilometers. But also with the e-Up, the theory is no guarantee for practice, so take it easy with some kilometers.
