With fuel prices going through the roof, it’s not such a bad idea to look for a smaller car that’s a little less thirsty and a little easier on the wallet. We are going to see what can be achieved for €5,000 in the A-segment.
Bella Italy
It goes without saying that the modern reincarnation of the Fiat 500 is a resounding success. Since its introduction in 2007, you literally stumble across it on the street. That is also easily explained, because it is just a very mischievous and cheerful car. Our eye fell on this blue one, which according to the seller is in very good condition. The pictures confirm that, it does indeed look neat. Not unimportant: this is an original Dutch copy and was therefore not subsequently imported from abroad. This 500 is equipped with the Fiat two-cylinder block, where it depends entirely on the weight of your right foot what you consume. The characteristic sound it produces is also just fun and suits this little one perfectly. It is not a highway knight, but with its 69 hp you are well served for rides in and around the city.

With the ruler
With its straight lines and angular shapes, you would think that this Seat Mii was designed with the ruler. The design is therefore fairly timeless and it also benefits the interior space, because this small Spaniard excels in its class. For frivolity you really have to look further on the market, because the only splurge of this city rascal is the bright yellow body color. That basic color in combination with the steel wheels reveal that we are dealing with the basic version here, although this copy is equipped with seat heating. A fairly unique option in this segment, and with cold winter days ahead, not a bad thing to have. If it gets a little too hot for you with this Spaniard, you can turn on the air conditioning or turn the windows down with an old-fashioned crank.

particularly smart
When Toyota came up with this IQ in 2009, it was not fully understood by the public. More than forty centimeters shorter than the Aygo, but a lot more expensive with a starting price of almost €12,000. However, this Japanese equivalent of the Smart is very well put together. It has the same three-cylinder power unit as the Aygo triplets, but that’s where the similarities end. Our eye fell on this neat Comfort version that comes from the second owner. This city mini has air conditioning, central locking, audio system and nine (!) airbags. You sit quite well up front. In the back, in an emergency, you can place an adult or two small children. With the rear seats flat, you suddenly have a hefty 238 liters of cargo space. Special: Aston Martin has put this IQ on the market as Cygnet. That’s a cool story if you want to account for this IQ on birthdays.
