Lotus will draw the curtain of a completely new model on July 6: the Emira. In a shadowy teaser video, Lotus already shows something of the interior of that Emira.
It’s rumbling at Lotus. In a positive way. Thanks to its Chinese owner Geely, the brand has again the financial opportunity to draw up ambitious plans for the future. The brand will focus on electric sports cars, among other things. Lotus already showed its first electric entry, the Evija, to the world in 2019 and every new Lotus will eventually be fully electric. In time, indeed. Lotus will present the Emira on July 6, the last new Lotus with purely combustion engines and no form of electrification.
The Lotus Emira, which started life as a Type 131, will be on one of the four new platforms that the brand first exposed in April this year. The Emira will be based on the Sports Car Architecture, a basis that Lotus internally calls ‘Elemental’. The Emira seems to function somewhat as a successor to the Elise and Exige, although you should not be surprised if the Emira is a bit bigger and at the same time a little less spartan than those two. The combustion engines come from another partner, which means that the Emira will not get any Toyota machines. Lotus is now part of Geely, a company that includes Volvo in its pocket. So don’t be surprised if the Emira is available with well-known machines. Lotus previously indicated that the Emira combines the well-known brand values with technology, comfort and luxury that today’s customer would expect. In any case, the teaser video shows all the apparently fully customizable instruments of the Emira.
Lotus Emira
Does Lotus have more up its sleeve? Hell yes. There will be more electric hypercar-types like the Evija. In addition, Lotus is working with Alpine on an electric model and Lotus has a whole series of electrically powered ‘lifestyle’ models in the pipeline.
