French President Emmanuel Macron wants purchase subsidies for electric cars to benefit only European cars. His German colleague Olaf Scholz now also seems to be in favor of such an exclusive EV subsidy.
If it is up to Emmanuel Macron, in the near future the purchase subsidy for electric cars will only be available EU-wide for cars from the EU. His finance minister had already presented this idea to him earlier. With this idea, Macron is following the lead of US President Joe Biden, who earlier this year introduced a similar measure for cars built in the US. This is of course done to protect the ‘own’ industry, with which Biden in a sense also follows in the footsteps of his predecessor Donald Trump. European manufacturers are making their chests for more competition from China and, according to Macron, it is therefore urgently needed. “Europe is still open to all winds, we have to change that,” said the French president. Important, because France and Germany are, after all, the two countries with the largest car industry in the EU.
