Magic Keyboard 2021 FAQ: Everything you need to know
At the unveiling of the new iMac, the design of the device itself stood out. Nevertheless, the accessories may also be there. You should know all this about the new Magic Keyboard.
1. Available only with an iMac
Apple’s new Magic Keyboard, unveiled with the new M1 iMac, only ships with this new iMac. At the moment, the keyboard cannot be ordered separately, but that may change in the future.
2. Works on other devices
The new Magic Keyboard does work on other Mac devices. The Touch ID sensor on the keyboard only works on Macs with an M1 chip, including the latest versions of the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac mini. The sensor does not work with the new iPad Pro, which does contain an M1 chip. Aside from the Touch ID sensor, the new Magic Keyboard can be used with other Macs and iPads.
3. Three versions
Three different versions of the new Magic Keyboard are available. There is a basic version without Touch ID and a standard version with Touch ID. The third version is wider because a keypad has been added, including Touch ID. There is no Magic Keyboard with keypad without Touch ID available.
You usually have to pay extra for a keyboard with Touch ID and keypad. However, if you buy an expensive version of the M1 iMac, a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID is included as standard.
4. Special keys
The Magic Keyboard has some special keys. So you can quickly go to Spotlight, the dictation function, ‘Do not disturb’ and emoji.
5. Same color as your iMac
The Magic Keyboard will be the same color as the iMac you buy. The new M1 iMac is available in seven colors, so the keyboard also comes in seven different colors.
6. Unlock your Mac with Touch ID
If you choose a version of the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, it is possible to unlock your Mac via your fingerprint. You just have to put your finger on the button in the top right corner.
7. Design: Curves, but no relief
Compared to the previous design of Apple’s Mac keyboards, the new Magic Keyboard stands out for its curves. Not only is every corner rounded, but the keys on the corners are rounded too. Remarkably, no key lighting has been added to the keyboard.
8. Recharge battery via Lightning
The Magic Keyboard is wireless with a rechargeable battery. A Lightning cable is included to charge the device.
