Maserati is working on a brand new SUV that will be offered under the Levante. The Italians are already showing the Grecale themselves, albeit in quite moving photos.
In September, it was suddenly busy around Maserati. The brand unveiled the spectacular MC20, but that was not the only news from Maserati. It also announced that the Grecale is coming. An SUV that will be a step lower in the range than the Levante. Then we got the car and profil to see, now Maserati is kind enough to share some action photos from other angles. The only problem is that apparently the photographer could barely follow the car.
Obviously, this is on purpose, because the disclosure will take some time yet. Maserati reports that the Grecale – which is probably about the size Alfa Romeo Stelvio – will be unveiled ‘before the end of 2021’. “The prototypes will now undergo a period of intensive testing on the road, on the track and in rugged terrain. Different conditions to gather as much data as possible in preparation for the final version of the new SUV,” said Maserati. So we can expect a Maserati SUV that should be able to show its best side under quite a variety of conditions.
Maserati remains silent in all languages about technical details of the Grecale. Given the future plans of the brand, it is extra exciting what the drive provides. The Grecale photographed here still has clear exhausts, so we can at least expect an internal combustion engine. Don’t be surprised if there is also an electrically powered version of it; Maserati is already preparing the successors of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio with an electric powertrain.
More likely is the arrival of mild hybrid vigor. Last summer that came to the Ghibli. The Ghibli Hybrid has a blown 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine under the hood, which gets an electrical boost from a 48V mild hybrid system. All in all, it’s good for a peak power of 330 hp and a maximum torque of 450 Nm, which goes to the rear wheels via an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. We’ll know for sure later this year.
