Without the worldwide shortage of computer chips, we could have shown you the Maserati Grecale in full gear this week, but the release has been postponed until next year. As a cloth for the bleeding, AutoWeek can tell you the first and fairly extensive technical information about the model.
The Levante will get a smaller SUV next year: the Grecale. The Maserati Grecale was due to be presented on November 16, but Maserati was forced to postpone the unveiling of the model to 2022, mainly due to the worldwide shortage of computer chips. The brand shares with AutoWeek an extensive series of photos of a packed Grecale and immediately gives the first technical data free.
Maserati Grecale
The Grecale is an SUV with which Maserati wants to sink its teeth into a smaller SUV segment than that in which the 5-meter-long Levante has been operating since 2016. The Grecale is 4.85 meters long, 1.95 meters wide and 1.67 meters high. That makes the Maserati Grecale a good 15 centimeters longer than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Porsche Macan. At 2.9 meters, the wheelbase of the Grecale is shorter than that of the Levante, but 9 centimeters longer than that of group mate Stelvio.
Mild-hybrid
We expect that the Grecale will come on the market with a more than 500 hp strong six-cylinder, but Maserati is not yet releasing anything about such powerful versions. The brand does share the technical specifications of the entry-level Grecale GT. That is a variant with 48v mild-hybrid powertrain. It gets a 2.0-liter blown four-cylinder petrol engine with a starter generator. That mild-hybrid Grecale is 300 hp and 450 Nm strong. That power is distributed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. A differential lock is available at an additional cost.
With its 300 hp, the 1,870 kg mild-hybrid Grecale shoots to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. Those who have patience for a total of 23.7 seconds will have the 200 km/h on the clock. Its top speed is 240 km/h. We also expect that Maserati will also supply the 330 hp mild-hybrid powertrain that we know from the Ghibli Hybrid and Levante Hybrid in the Grecale, but nothing is officially known about this. The Grecale GT can be steered over the road in Comfort, GT, Sport and Off-Road driving modes and crawls 1.5 centimeters towards the asphalt in sport mode. In Off-Road mode, the car stands up to 3 centimeters higher on its legs.
Interior
Images of the interior keep Maserati under wraps for a while, although the manufacturer does tell us that almost all buttons are touch copies. In addition, the Grecale is the first Maserati ever with a digital clock that also functions as a G-force meter. Maserati also screws a series of displays into the Grecale, one of which measures 12.3 and a second 8.8 inches. The rear passengers also have a screen to control the climate control. The infotainment system supports, among other things, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (wireless).
For now, we have to make do with this information. The unveiling of the Grecale is scheduled for sometime next year, so more will be known about the more powerful drivetrains of the Levante’s spirited little brother.
