In a few months, Maserati will present its second SUV, the Grecale. The Grecale will be the little brother of the Levante and will come with a mild-hybrid powertrain, among other things. Fortunately for the purists, the Italians do not forget the existence of the word ‘Trofeo’.
Maserati is expanding its model range in November with the Grecale, an SUV most likely based on the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. Maserati quickly announced that the Grecale will receive an electrified powertrain, among other things, although that no longer seems to mean that the Grecale can be supplied with a mild-hybrid powertrain, just like the Ghibli. At the other end of the engine spectrum, the Grecale also promises to make itself heard. These new spy photos show a clearly thicker version.
We were able to show you pictures of the new Maserati Grecale in camouflage trim before, versions that always had a set of twin exhaust tailpipes on either side of the rear bumper. The Grecale, now snapped into a sleek sticker sheet, has two more distinctively shaped bangers on each side of the bumper, but that’s not the only thing that stands out. For example, this snapped copy is clearly closer to the asphalt than the previously snapped test copies. The wheel arches themselves are filled with apparently huge wheels, slippers that not only have a larger diameter, but also have a wider tread than the footwear of the previously shot Grecales. Behind the large light metal we also observe impressive-looking braking.
This can only mean one thing: the Grecale also gets an extra potent Trofeo variant. It is not inconceivable that the Maserati Grecale Trofeo will have a similar powertrain as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Q. That would mean that Maserati would hang a biturbo 2.9 V6 in the nose of its sportiest Grecale. With that machine, Maserati would target cars like the Macan GTS from Porsche. The Grecale will be presented in November. Whether this Trofeo will be heard immediately cannot be said with certainty.
