Maserati MC20 also as Spider and as EV

The Maserati MC20 is the first Maserati in times with a fully developed engine by and for Maserati. That does not prevent the Italians from developing an electric variant in addition. A Spider is also on the roll.

The electric version of the Maserati MC20 does not come as a surprise. Initially it even seemed that the car would appear purely as an EV, but that rumor was quickly debunked. The petrol engine is one of the highlights of the MC20 unveiled earlier this week, because the block is equipped with all kinds of innovations and exceptionally powerful. A 3.0 V6 with 630 hp and 730 Nm is of course a treat for every car enthusiast, especially in combination with a relatively low car weight.

Yet the MC20 also fits within Maserati’s extensive electrification plans. The fully electric version will follow in 2022, although we hope to see a sign of life sooner. The car is heavier than the conventional MC20, but still has to drive great due to a sophisticated powertrain. Four-wheel drive and no less than three electric motors are part of that drivetrain. One motor drives the front axle, the other two each drive a rear wheel. The battery pack is located behind the driver, more or less in the place where the promising V6 is given a place in the conventional MC20.

2022 is also the year in which the Maserati MC20 Spider should appear. Given the path that most competitors follow, a hard, cleverly divided folding roof is obvious, but officially nothing is known about this yet. As far as is currently known, the MC20 Spider only comes with a petrol engine.

Maserati does not reveal much about any intermediate forms in the form of hybrids. According to the brand, hybrids are not planned for the MC20, but a partly electric version is certainly considered ‘if the market requires it’.
