Buying a new mattress is a science in itself. Stiftung Warentest and Öko-Test bring light into the darkness – and regularly test foam, latex and pocket spring core mattresses. Here you can find out which mattresses are the best in 2023.

A good and fitting mattress has a positive effect on your night’s sleep and helps to prevent health problems such as back or hip pain. The mattress’ job is to support the spine during sleep, so that the spine is stored in its natural position while you are sleeping and your muscles are not active.

The mattress should not only suit your sleeping habits, your physique and your weight. Since you spend around a third of your life in bed and in direct contact with the mattress, it is important that it is free of harmful substances.

By the way: Experts advise not to wait too long before investing in a new mattress. With good care, high-quality mattresses can last up to fourteen years, according to TÜV Rheinland. For hygienic reasons, however, mattresses should not be used for longer periods.

Stiftung Warentest continuously tests mattresses. The most recent results are from February 2023, seven new models were checked for their lying properties, durability, cover, health, environmental impact, handling and declaration.

All recently tested models are so-called “duo mattresses”. With this type of mattress, one side is softer and one side is harder, so you can easily adjust the firmness to suit the sleeper by simply turning the mattress over. These were the winners:

The best duo mattresses 90 x 200 cm:

  • The test winner in the 2023 test was the Emma 25 Flip model: grade 1.7 / price: approx. 400 euros / tested 03/2023 / “health and environment” rating: very good (1.2). Available directly from the manufacturer.

  • The Sun Garden Memovita V880 took second place in 2023: grade 1.9 / price: approx. 200 euros / tested 03/2023 / “health and environment” rating: very good (1.2). Available** from Möbel Boss or Otto.de.

The following applies to both winners: “All body types lie well on them in a supine and lateral position,” according to the verdict of the examiners.

Which is the best mattress?

The two models are not for you? Because you’re not looking for a duo mattress, for example? Or 90 x 200 cm is too big for you? Then you will find below our overview of all other test winners for the various mattress types – from innerspring to latex to foam mattresses. To do this, we took a closer look at all the test results from 2021 and 2022.

Innerspring mattresses are so called because they contain steel springs inside, which give way where they are loaded (point elasticity). Anyone who sweats heavily is well advised to use a spring core mattress. Spring mattresses have the disadvantage that they are heavy and therefore difficult to transport.

Foam mattresses are light and are characterized by high elasticity. As soon as you move, they quickly return to their original shape. Its core consists of a specific mattress foam, eg visco foam, cold foam or comfort foam. Foam mattresses are not suitable for people who sweat a lot at night. Since they are easy to clean and air out, they are a good choice for allergy sufferers.

The best foam mattresses 90 x 200 cm:

    • Breckle Weida Pro Body S 592: grade 2.0 / price: approx. 370 euros / tested 09/2022 / “health and environment” rating: very good (1.2). Available** from Höffner, Otto or MFO Mattresses

The advantage of a latex mattress is that the material is very elastic. This makes latex very adaptable and supports a comfortable, usually rather soft lying position. However, latex mattresses have one disadvantage: They are quite expensive to buy.

The best latex mattresses 90 x 200 cm:

    • Allnatura Sanastar-Comfort: grade 2.2 / price: approx. 760 euros / tested 02/2022 / “health and environment” rating: good (1.7). Available** from Allnatura

Good to know: The test winner – the natural latex mattress “Sanastar-Comfort” from Allnatura is made in Germany. The latex comes from sustainable forestry and meets the criteria of the FSC.

Eco-mattresses without harmful substances in the test

We spend an average of seven to eight hours – and thus almost a third of our lives – in bed. It is not only important that our spine rests gently, but also that the mattress we lie on is free of toxins and pollutants. Materials that have been tested for harmful substances are important for healthy sleep and optimal relaxation.

For example, the testers from Stiftung Warentest tested the covers, fine upholstery and the core of the mattresses for harmful substances (such as pesticides, plasticizers, flame retardants or organotin compounds). The indoor air pollution, odor nuisance and disposal also played a role in the tests. These were the mattress test winners in the “Health and Environment” rating:

Particularly low-emission spring core mattresses (Stiftung Warentest)**:

    • Emma Dynamic (140 x 200 cm): grade 1.8 / price: approx. 370 euros / tested 09/2021 / “health and environment” rating: very good (1.4). Available** from Otto, Höffner or Amazon

    • Emma Dynamic (90 x 200 cm): grade 2.2 / price: approx. 240 euros / tested 09/2021 / “health and environment” rating: very good (1.4). Available** from Otto, Höffner or Amazon

    • Badenia Trendline BT1000 Classic (140 x 200 cm): grade 2.3 / price: approx. 380 euros / tested 09/2021 / “health and environment” rating: very good (1.4). Available** at Lidl.

    • Breckle Weida Pro Body S 592 (90 x 200 cm): grade 2.0 / price: approx. 370 euros / tested 09/2022 / “health and environment” rating: very good (1.2). Available** from Höffner, Otto or MFO Mattresses

    • Badenia Irisette Büsum KS (90 x 200 cm): grade 2.2 / price: approx. 350 euros / tested 09/2022 / “health and environment” rating: very good (1.2). Available** from Otto, Betten Prinz or Amazon

Mattresses at Öko-Test: These are the test winners (not)

Unfortunately, the magazine Öko-Test has no longer tested (adult) mattresses in recent years, but rather those for children and babies. That’s why you won’t find any mattress winners from Öko-Test here at the moment: After all, we don’t want to recommend any outdated products. • The test result is an important point of reference – but your personal preferences also count. The best way to find out what material the mattress of your choice should be made of is to do a test in the shop.
      • Anyone who sweats easily at night is well advised to use a spring core mattress, while those who tend to shiver should opt for a foam or latex mattress.
      • The tests by Stiftung Warentest show that the manufacturer’s hardness specifications are often incorrect. In the laboratory, the testers determined some other values. Stiftung Warentest advises: “The degree of firmness of a mattress does not affect its supporting properties. A soft mattress can give the spine just as much support as a hard one.” This means: You can choose the firmness of the bed according to your preference and how comfortable you are.
      • The tests show that expensive does not automatically mean good. Some good mattresses, as can be seen above, are available for less than 200 euros.

      Care tips for your mattress

      1. In order to be able to use your mattress for as long as possible, you should take good care of it. You can prevent mold growth by regularly turning or airing the mattress. Then you don’t have to dispose of your mattress too early.
      2. In another article, we will tell you what to look out for if you suffer from a house dust mite allergy.
