Mazda 323 (1991) – Into the Wild

Today we’re sweeping the digital shelves of In the Wild for a seemingly spick-and-span Mazda 323 of the fourth generation that bore that name. This makes ‘our’ 323 collection more or less complete, because except for the last generation of Mazda’s C-segmenter that is not quite In the Wild yet, all generations of the model have now passed in this section. Hurray!

A total of six generations of Mazda in Europe have carried the 323 name, and today’s spotlight is one of the fourth. After previously highlighting the FA4, BD, BF and BA generation in In het Wild, we are now giving the stage to the BG generation. It was sold in the Netherlands from 1989 to 1994 and already in 1993 we found that it was a great car. One that, moreover, being four years old at the time, suffered relatively little from rust.

If that also applied to all 323s in the longer term, we would have seen even more on the street. After all, it is not the Mazda technology from that time. Nevertheless, the BG generation is now quietly closing the back of the row for the gates of heaven, because Mazdas from this time have largely disappeared from Dutch soil for a number of years. There are, of course, always exceptions that prove the rule.

This still bright red copy is one of them. The car recently started serving as an 18-year-old’s first car to maintain a user review on our site. In it we read that the car only recently passed 50,000 on its odometer, which partly explains the apparently good condition of the 323. We find a further explanation in the owner history, because the Mazda was always with its first family in Twente prior to the recent change of ownership. He probably kept the car in a garage, judging by the condition of the paint and plastic. The original 13-inch alloy wheels somehow managed to shake off their original color.

However, that should not spoil the fun. Now that the still fresh 323 is in the hands of a young guy who under his review promises to make at least one nice road trip with it in the future, its second life can begin. Whether it will last another 32 years, we dare to doubt. Nevertheless, we would like to encourage the new owner to go for it and to be careful with it. Lots of fun!
