Mazda CX-5: now always mild hybrid

Until recently, the Mazda CX-5 was available with 165 hp and 194 hp Skyactiv-G petrol engines and those machines will continue to exist. However, from now on they will be called e-Skyactiv G. And for good reason.

Mild hybrid

The 2.0 and 2.5 liter four-cylinder petrol engines that Mazda supplies in the CX-5 are now equipped with Mazda’s 24v M Hybrid technology. So from now on we are dealing with mild-hybrid machines. The 2.0 e-Skyactiv G is, just like before, 165 hp and 213 Nm strong and the speeds at which those forces are released have not changed. The CX-5 with this 165 hp mild-hybrid petrol engine always sends its power to the front wheels and, as before, is available with a six-speed manual gearbox and a six-speed automatic transmission. The version with manual gearbox records an average consumption of 6.5 l/100 km and is therefore more economical than the version without M-Hybrid technology (6.8 l/100 km). The Mazda CX-5 with this petrol engine and automatic transmission consumes an average of 6.9 l/100 km and is therefore more economical than the version without mild hybrid technology (7.3 l/100 km).

2.5 e-Skyactiv G, which is now also called e-Skyactiv G, provides more power. That previously 194 hp and 258 Nm strong petrol engine gets a few Nm’s and now kicks it up to 263 Nm. This 2.5 is always linked to an automatic transmission and is available with both front and four-wheel drive. The average consumption of the front-wheel drive is 7.2 l/100 km, the four-wheel drive version enjoys an average of 7.6 l/100 km (was: 8.0 l/100 km). Mazda says, among other things, that it has improved the throttle response of the 2.5.

Performances

As before with other Mazdas, the manufacturer also goes through the versions with the CX-5 with the broom. The nameless basic version will disappear and the Comfort, Luxury and Sportive will not return either. The entry-level version is now called the Center Line, a step above that is now the Advantage and the Exclusive Line. In addition, Mazda introduces three special versions: the Newground, Homura and Takumi.

The Mazda CX-5 Center Line has 17-inch alloys as standard, offers wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity and has a navigation system as standard. The Advantage adds things like 19-inch wheels and a 360-degree camera. The Exclusive line in turn has things like special LED lighting all around, an inductive charger for telephones, an extensive Bose audio system and a more beautifully finished interior.

Mazda CX-5

Of the special editions, the Newground is the variant that gives the Mazda CX-5 a rougher edge. This version has, among other things, silver-colored and black plastic trim parts all around. This version features yellow-green accents in the grille, 19-inch black alloys and suede interior trim with yellow-green stitching. The Homura has a black trim around the grille and black trim on the bumpers, wheel arches, exterior mirrors and at the bottom of the doors. This variant also has black alloy wheels. You will find red accents in the grille. The partially leather-trimmed interior is finished with red stitching. The most luxurious of the bunch, the Takumi features a one-tone exterior with 19-inch silver wheels and a nappa leather-trimmed interior, complete with wood on the dashboard and doors.

Prices Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 has a starting price of €38,190. For that amount you get the basic version with manual gearbox, 165 hp 2.0 and the Center Line version. Prefer the automatic? Then you have lost €2,500 more. For the CX-5 with 165 hp 2.0 in Advantage trim you will have to pay a minimum of €42,190, the Executive Line will cost a minimum of €43,090. For the Newground, Homura and Takumi, Mazda is asking at least €43,190, €44,890 and €46,440 consecutively.

The CX-5 with 194 hp 2.5 costs a minimum of €47,390 as a Center Line. The Advantage and Exclusive Line cost €49,390 and €50,290 respectively. For the Newground you have lost €50,390 while Mazda asks for €52,090 for the Homura. Top version Takumi costs €53,640 in combination with the 2.5.
