Mazda ended its broken fiscal year with an operating profit, despite declining sales. The European market was hit hardest, but there was growth in some other markets.
Mazda sold 1,287,000 vehicles worldwide in the past fiscal year (March 2020 to March 2021). That means a decrease in sales of 9.3 percent compared to a year earlier. Especially in Europe it deteriorated sharply, of course largely because of the lockdowns. With around 178,000 cars, 32.3 percent less was sold here than a year earlier. In home country Japan, sales also declined, by 12.9 percent to roughly 176,000 units. There was growth in North America (+2 percent, 400,000 cars) and China (+8 percent, 228,000 cars).
At the bottom of the line, Mazda still manages to close the year on a positive note, despite the fall in sales. It records an operating profit of € 71 million. For the fiscal year that has just begun, Mazda is counting on a recovery in sales. It expects to sell 1.41 million cars this year, an increase of 9.5 percent. This should bring it back to roughly the level of the previous fiscal year. The operating profit must also be much higher: € 503.9 million.
