Mazda opens a can of interesting news. The brand not only announces the arrival of the CX-60 and CX-80, which include six-in-line petrol engines and plug-in hybrid powertrains, there is also news in the fully electric field. The MX-30 will also be launched with a rotary engine next year and Mazda is working on a new EV platform.
The Mazda MX-30 is a special model. The first all-electric Mazda ever is a quirky compact SUV with small rear-hinged rear doors. Mazda only supplies the MX-30 in Europe as an EV, but also has a version with a mild-hybrid petrol engine on the menu in its home country of Japan. At the beginning of 2020, Mazda announced that there would also be an MX-30 with a rotary engine, a version of which we have not heard anything for a long time. Until now. Mazda confirms that it will bring the MX-30 with rotary engine to Europe in the first half of next year.
As you might have expected, the rotary engine in the MX-30 will not function as a regular powertrain as in cars like the RX-7 and RX-8. In the new variant of the MX-30, the rotary motor serves as a range extender and thus charges the battery pack while driving.
The Mazda MX-30 is based on the CX-30 and is therefore not a so-called dedicated EV, a model designed primarily as an electric car. From 2025, however, Mazda will come with a completely new platform that is specifically designed for electric cars. Mazda wants to have its entire model range electrified by 2030. Electrified, so not entirely electric.
