The fourth generation of the Mazda MX-5, called ND, has been running since 2015 in more or less unchanged form. Mazda will not make any rigorous changes for model year 2022, but improves the MX-5 under the skin and comes with a new interior and exterior color for the roadster.

First of all, the external changes: the color palette of the MX-5 is expanded with the platinum Quartz Metallic paintwork, which resembles champagne. Mazda describes it as ‘an elegant silky white with quartz-like transparency’. The new interior color is ‘Terracotta leather’, a brown leather interior with perforated leather in the seats and silver-grey stitching. The dashboard and door panels are then covered in black artificial leather where the terracotta is reflected in the stitching. Champagne Quartz is in the option list for €850, while the new interior color costs €750.

The improvement that Mazda is making to the chassis of the MX-5 is perhaps more interesting. The roadster gets Mazda Kinematic Posture Control, abbreviated KPC. This system monitors the speed difference between the rear wheels and slightly brakes the inner rear wheel when cornering. According to Mazda, KPC has a stabilizing effect on the car during tighter corners and the system prevents the body from leaning. Of course, a field test should show to what extent KPC actually makes a difference, but it certainly sounds promising. Mazda will supply the system as standard on the MX-5 Roadster and RF from model year 2022.

Other decoration

In addition to these changes, Mazda also slightly adjusts the Signature and Sportive versions. From next year, the Signature will have a nappa leather interior in the color ‘Pure White’ and a dark red soft top or a twin-tone roof, depending on whether you choose the Roadster or the RF. The Sportive gets as Roadster a black instead of a light gray soft top. The engines on the price list, namely the SkyActiv-G 132 and -184, remain unchanged. The updated MX-5 is available from €37,490, €1,500 more expensive than at the beginning of this year. In that case you get a manual roadster with 132 hp. For the RF you have to pay an additional €2,500. The SkyActiv-G 184 has an additional cost of €5,000, regardless of the trim level.
