Not an electric hypercar

McLaren likes Porsche Taycan rival

McLaren is interested in a competitor for cars like the electric Porsche Taycan. The brand, on the other hand, would feel little need to come up with an electric ‘hypercar’. This is apparent from reports from our English sister magazine AutoExpress.

McLaren finally found a new CEO in April this year in Michael Leiters, former CTO of the company. Before Leiters’ appointment, McLaren was a rudderless ship for a relatively long time, as it was announced in October that former CEO Mike Flewitt would resign his duties. McLaren is no longer drifting adrift under Leiters. In fact, the helm goes pm. In conversation with the English AutoExpress, Leiters says that, unlike his predecessor, he does not want to add an electric hypercar to McLaren’s delivery range.

According to the brand new CEO, the technology is not yet advanced enough to develop an electric hypercar. Instead, according to Leiters, McLaren would be better off focusing on a more conventional EV. Leiters says he believes it is necessary for McLaren to bring “something with seats for more occupants” to the market, and that it does not necessarily have to be something higher on its legs. However, Leiters does not rule out the possibility that this is a model with greater ground clearance.

Michael Leiters says he will no longer accept that McLaren “[…] brings a car onto the market that was not yet fully developed.” In addition, Leiters specifically states that the quality of McLaren cars was previously substandard. The CEO does not indicate with which brand he will enter into a technological collaboration, but tells AutoExpress realize that such a step is necessary.
