Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE Performance

Meet the fantastic top version of the Mercedes-AMG GT. This is the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE Performance, an absolute power plug-in with a name as long as its exorbitant power.

Nowadays, the most powerful AMG models no longer all have a V12 or V8. In fact, the V12 is currently no longer in any AMG model and the 63 flavors of the Mercedes-Benz C-class even exchanged their mighty eight-cylinders for machines with four fewer engines. The absolute top version of the new Mercedes-AMG GT still has a V8, just like its predecessor. Although, just… The 4.0 V8 receives support from a strong dose of electrical assistance in the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE Performance.

Indeed, just like the C-class, AMG GT 4-Door Coupé, S-class and the successor to the AMG Roadster, now available as an SL, the top version of the new Mercedes-AMG GT also has a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. However, it has not been developed to allow AMG GT owners to enjoy the greatest possible electric range. The electric assistance was created purely for extra power and therefore extra speed. A brief summary: the long nose houses a 4.0 V8 with two turbos. That machine produces 612 hp and 850 Nm, more than the 585 hp that the V8 in the AMG GT 63 4Matic produces without plug-in assistance. In addition, there are the electric horses of an electric motor. It delivers 204 of them, as well as 320 Nm’s. The result: a system power of 816 hp and – albeit temporarily – up to 1,420 Nm of pulling force.

Thanks to that modern but also almost primitive primal power, the AMG GT 63 SE Performance thunders from a standstill to a speed of 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds. This makes it the fastest accelerating Mercedes-Benz ever. Its top speed: 320 km/h. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE Performance has a 6.1 kWh battery on board, a battery that is significantly smaller than the batteries in Mercedes-Benz plug-ins that have been developed for a long range. The 6.1 kWh battery gives the top coupe an electric range of a modest 13 kilometers. The package has been purely developed for the fastest possible energy release. The open AMG GT alternative – the SL – was already available with this drivetrain, just like the AMG GT 4-Door Coupé and S-class. The Mercedes-AMG C 63 SE Performance has similar hardware, although that car, like every other engine version of the C-class, has to make do with a four-cylinder. With 843 hp, the GT 4-Door is even slightly more powerful – but not faster – than this Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE Performance.

Of course, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE Performance is more than just extremely strong. It has AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive, extensive active aerodynamics, AMG Active Ride Control, ceramic brakes and of course a bold appearance complete with spoiler and wing work and 20-inch alloys.

Dutch prices are not yet available, but thanks to the relatively low CO2 emissions on paper thanks to the plug-in hybrid hardware, they could well turn out to be ‘favourable’ for a sports coupe with this power.
