Mercedes-AMG SL 63 E Performance

You may have thought that the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 was already the strongest version, but at the unveiling the Germans already promised an even stronger E Performance version. It’s here now! And whether it is a bit stronger…

The Mercedes-AMG SL is sportier than ever and of course a powerful SL 63 immediately appeared upon its introduction. Thanks to its 585 hp strong 4.0 biturbo V8, it has no reason to complain and yet there is something nagging about that version. . Even the Mercedes-AMG C 63 is already stronger and it has a four-cylinder engine as its beating heart. How is that possible? Hybrid power. However, the SL can also taste that, as was evident at the unveiling. Now the wait for the crazy partly electric top version is over. Here is the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 SE Performance.

In contrast to the aforementioned top version of the C-class, the SL 63 SE Performance does not have a four-cylinder engine, but simply the well-known V8 in its nose. This is now supported by a 204 hp electric motor, which brings the system power to 816 hp and the torque to 1,080 to 1,420 Nm. Swallow. He is therefore not as strong as power plug-in pioneerMercedes-AMG GT 4-Door 63 SE Performance, but with a nice 231 hp and up to 620 Nm stronger than the regular SL 63. This leads, among other things, to a 0 to 100 km/h sprint that is only 2.9 in instead of 3.6 seconds. The top speed is only 2 km higher at 317 km/h, but do you really need much more?

13 km electric

How does the all-wheel drive Mercedes-AMG SL 63 SE Performance get its electric power? Well, via a only 6.1 kWh battery that can be charged with a 3.7 kW on-board charger. From those figures you can already see that this is not about electric driving, but about a temporary boost of electric horsepower to enable intense performance. If you want to drive fully electric, the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 SE Performance will last for a maximum of 13 km.

Of course, you can quickly indicate what exactly you want to do with the hybrid SL. Via the AMG button or on the central infotainment screen you can choose from the modes Electric, Battery Hold, Comfort, Slippery, Sport, Sport+, Race and Individual. As the name suggests, the latter allows you to set the car to your own wishes. For example, the throttle response, steering adjustment, damping and sound can be adjusted. The carbon-ceramic brakes, semi-active suspension, semi-active roll stabilization, adaptive dampers and active aerodynamics must keep the car sharp in the corners and that is certainly not an unnecessary luxury due to the not yet known, but undoubtedly much higher weight.

Subtle and less subtle differences

On the outside, the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 SE Performance distinguishes itself very subtly from its less fortunate brothers. The type designation is in red letters and on the flank below the regular V8 biturbo badge there is also E Performance. The difference that is most striking is the tailgate on the back of the car. It is not to be missed. If you are still looking for it: it is under the right rear light.

It is not yet known what the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 SE Performance will cost. Because of its partly electric drive, it could become the most interesting SL 63 here in the Netherlands, not only in terms of power, but also in terms of price.
