Four cylinders, four pipes
Just a little while and Mercedes-Benz will introduce the new E-class to the world. We saw that car in packed form several times, but not yet as a station wagon with a ‘mild’ AMG jacket.
Mercedes-Benz presents a completely new E-class this year. It again comes in sedan and station wagon form and also gets an E53 flavour: an AMG treatment that results in a car that is not as intense as the E63, but has sportier design elements and a relatively large amount of power. A packed Mercedes-AMG E53 Estate partly proves that this also applies to the next-generation E-Class. In the spy photos we see a grille with vertical bars, large wheels and brakes and four exhaust tailpipes.
The latter are expected to provide a cylinder-end ratio of 1 to 1, because the E53 will most likely get a slightly tweaked variant of the powertrain that we already know from the new C63. It combines a plug-in hybrid system with a pretty potent four-cylinder, good for 680 hp in the case of the sporty C-class.

Furthermore, the spotted car is well packed, so that the specific design elements of the next E-class remain a secret for a while. We don’t expect many surprises; just assume that the ‘E’ is very similar to the current S-class. A full-fat AMG variant of the new E-class is also in the offing, but it has so far managed to avoid our photographer’s lens and will only come later. The AMG E-class reportedly gets a six-cylinder with hybrid system under its hood, a powertrain that we have not found in any other model so far. For the E53 (the one with a four-cylinder), we expect the unveiling to coincide with that of the regular variants of the new E-class.
