The Mercedes-Benz E-class, which was presented in 2016, will be operated. Mercedes-Benz only holds a handful of new design elements.
Mercedes-Benz is relatively striking in the facelift of the E-class. Instead of borrowing design elements from big brother S-class, it is the A-class Limousine that seems to have served as inspiration for the revised E-class.
The E-class will get a modified front that will now have to do without a ‘classic’ version of the grille and the proud Mercedes logo. Always ‘Avant-garde’. The ‘E’ gets new bumpers and adapted, flatter, standard full-LED headlights that bring the E-class more in line with the younger, more compact models of the brand. The influences of A-class Limousine are also reflected on the rear of the E-class sedan. Mercedes-Benz assembles modified light units here that run towards the center, and part of which gets a place on the tailgate. The E Estate is handled with a milder approach. The revised LED layout of the rear light units is particularly striking here. Mercedes-Benz also adjusts the bumper package of the versions with AMG Line package and brings it more in line with the way the bumpers of the AMG models look. The Avantgarde, AMG-Line and All-Terrains now have a bonnet with ‘power domes’. The All Terrain is further finished on the outside with more chrome-colored details than before. Mercedes-Benz also makes fresh paint colors and new light-alloy wheels available and the interior is also finished with other colors and materials.
In the interior, Mercedes-Benz mounts a new six-spoke flattened steering wheel at the bottom that looks like it only has three spokes. Behind the wheel we always find two 10.25-inch digital displays. The digital set of instruments was previously not standard. Mercedes-Benz optionally supplies two 12.3-inch units. The standard MBUX infotainment system is being upgraded and now recognizes, among other things, whether the driver or co-driver gives the system commands by saying ‘Hey Mercedes’.
Other novelties include the engine range. Mercedes’ medium-sized sedan gets new gasoline engines. It is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter six-in-line. These machines are both equipped with a starter generator that gives extra power thanks to the 48-volt on-board voltage. The four-cylinder engine delivers 272 hp and, thanks to electrical assistance (EQ Boost), has an additional 20 hp temporarily. The six-cylinder engine kicks it up to 367 hp and also benefits from 20 additional, electrically-generated horsepower.
There is also news on plug-in area. The already presented E300de and E300e can now also be ordered with four-wheel drive. Until now they were only available with drive on the rear wheels.
The E-class is equipped as standard with Active Brake Assist, a system that brakes for stationary vehicles and pedestrians if required. Thanks to Active Stop-and-Go, the E-class can stay neatly in the middle of its track at up to 60 km / h and brake ahead. Mercedes-Benz introduces, among other things, an augmented reality mode for the navigation system that provides information about the environment. The total list of safety systems includes an active file assistant, a steering and brake assistant, a blind spot assistant with exit warning and a 360-degree camera. Of course, not everything is standard.
AMG 53
We have to wait a bit longer for the updated hardcore 63-AMGs. Mercedes-Benz does, however, review the E53 4Matic, the sub-topper. This again has a 435 horsepower and a 520 Nm strong 3.0 six-in-line under the hood that, thanks to EQ Boost, can temporarily draw from 22 hp and 250 Nm. The E-class sedan shoots in that form in 4.5 counts to 100 km / h. The Estate knows that job done in 4.6 seconds. On the outside, the 53 AMG variant of the regular E’s can be distinguished thanks to its AMG grille, sporty bumper work and its 19- or 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. New is, among other things, the arrival of the AMG Dynamic Plus Package, a package with which the E 53 can also be set for the first time in a Race program with Drift mode.
