Mercedes-Benz EQB: electric GLB on the market at the end of this year

On the eve of Auto Shanghai, Mercedes-Benz presents the electric EQB. The EQB is the fully electric version of the GLB, which means that the Mercedes-Benz model range is an electric seven-seater richer. The EQB is currently only presented in Chinese trim, but is also coming to Europe. The version of the electric Mercedes-Benz EQB intended for the European market will follow later this year. In the Netherlands, the electric EQB will be on the market at the end of this year.

The new EQB will soon shine next to Mercedes-Benz’s brand new electric flagship, the EQS, on the Shanghai exhibition floor. Where the EQS is basically developed as an electric car and therefore one dedicated electric model, the EQB is not. Namely, the EQB shares its platform with the GLB in the same way that the electric EQA is based on the GLA. Just like under the GLA, EQA and GLB, the EQB’s body, peppered with EQ details, contains the MFA2 platform, which is basically also suitable for combustion engines.

We’ll start with the look of the EQB. Although the exterior of the electric SUV mainly resembles that of the GLB, Mercedes-Benz has given its new EV a partly individual look. The relatively small square headlights of the GLB have had to leave the field. Instead, the GLB has Just like its electric smaller brother, the EQA, the GLB has a flatter and wider front that is tied together by an LED strip. Underneath the LED strip is a dense, high-gloss black surface that functions as a kind of mask. The rear of the CAP also resembles that of the GLA. Here too, therefore, fairly flat rear lights that, like the lighting at the front, seem to consist more or less of one whole thanks to a wide red strip. The number plate moves down one floor and, unlike the GLB, is not in the middle of the tailgate, but in the rear bumper. The EQB is 4.68 meters long and is therefore a few centimeters longer than the GLB thanks to deviating bumper work.

The EQB, as presented in China and built by the Beijing Benz Automotive joint venture, features a 292 horsepower electric powertrain. In Europe, the EQB will at least be available with front and all-wheel drive. Mercedes-Benz already mentions “[…] more than 272 hp versions “. The battery capacity in Europe will soon be 66.5 kWh. This makes the battery pack the same size as in the EQA. The EQA is available as 190 hp and 375 Nm strong 250. We are aiming for that too the EQB will get about 250 version. In addition, the brand already speaks of a 350 version. Possibly this is the 272 hp strong flavor. The EQB 350 4Matic is at least 419 WLTP kilometers far on a charge. can be charged with alternating current (AC) with a charging capacity of up to 11 kW, and can be charged quickly with a charging capacity of up to 100 kW.

Just like the GLB, the EQB will be available as a five- and seven-seater. The luggage compartment of the five-seater version measures 495 liters, that of the seven-seater 465 liters. If you throw the back seat flat, you can drag along in the five- and seven-seater respectively 1,710 liters and 1,620 liters. Mercedes-Benz can optionally supply the EQB with a second row of seats that can be moved over 14 centimeters. This makes it possible to increase the luggage space by up to 190 liters. The interior of the EQB offers few surprises, as it matches that of the GLB.

The EQB to be sold in Europe will roll off the production line in Hungary later this year. Prices and extensive technical specifications will follow in the run-up to the market launch, which will take place towards the end of this year.
