Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV

Mercedes-Benz is pulling the curtain on yet another new EQ model in Paris, the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV. Not surprisingly, it largely looks at the art of the EQE, EQS and especially the EQS SUV.

Highlights

  • In the spirit of the EQS SUV
  • Up to 590 km range
  • Direct as AMG 43 and 53
  • On the market in 2023

After the Mercedes-Benz EQS, EQE and EQS SUV, the curtain now falls on the car ‘you knew would come’: the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, the SUV brother of the EQE. We don’t think that the chance that you will be taken aback by what Mercedes’ latest EV looks like is very high. That is good news if you can appreciate the design of Mercedes’ electric top models. The Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV looks like two drops of water on the EQS SUV and of course also shares the necessary external similarities with the ‘low’ EQ models. Although an SUV is by no means an aerodynamic marvel, Mercedes-Benz has managed to make a pretty ‘smooth’ model of the EQE SUV thanks to quite a few curves. Much needed, of course, for optimal efficiency, because despite its size, the EQE SUV must also be able to take you quite a long way with a full battery.

Speaking of that size: the EQE SUV is strikingly enough shorter than the EQE. The wheelbase of the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is 3.03 meters, which is 9 cm less than that of the EQE. With a total length of more than 4.86 meters, it is also 9 cm shorter overall. Compared to the EQS SUV, it makes a difference of 27 cm. In terms of luggage space, he wins because of its higher body and tailgate of course from the EQE, because in the EQE SUV you can lose 520 liters in the back. In the EQE that is 430 liters. With the rear seats flat, the EQE SUV already proves its added value, with a capacity of 1,675 liters. You will probably notice a negative difference with the EQE in terms of legroom, although you do not have to complain with more than a meter of legroom (from the backrest). An advantage of the EQE SUV is of course that because of the high roofline you are less likely to get your crown close to the roof.

Five versions

Mercedes-Benz does not give up and immediately presents five different versions of the EQE SUV. It will not surprise you, but in terms of drive, we see the necessary similarities with the other EQ models mentioned earlier. The range starts for the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV with the 350+. It is 292 hp and 565 Nm strong and rear-wheel drive. Mercedes-Benz does not report the size of the battery pack in the regular versions, but the AMGs have a 90.6 kWh capacity. This probably also applies to non-AMGs. In any case, the 350+ must be able to cover a maximum of 590 km according to the WLTP cycle. It is therefore also the EQE SUV with the largest driving range.

One step higher you will find the EQE 350 4Matic, which, as its name implies, is four-wheel drive. It also has 292 hp power, but with 765 Nm it has a lot more torque. The Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV 350 4Matic has a maximum driving range of 558 km. Finally, the top version among the non-AMGs is the EQE SUV 500 4Matic. It is 408 hp and 858 Nm strong, four-wheel drive and comes to 547 km. The four-wheel drive versions can tow up to 1,800 kilograms, the 350+ has a maximum towing weight of 750 kilograms.

Then there are the two AMG versions. These can be distinguished from the non-AMGs by the different ‘grille’, with the chrome-plated bars that you also find on AMGs with a fuel engine. The mildest AMG version is the Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV 43 4Matic. It is barely 477 hp strong, just like the 500 4Matic has a maximum torque of 858 Nm and can reach a maximum distance of 488 km with a full battery. With the AMGs, the performance figures are of course extra relevant: the 43 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and has a top speed of 210 km/h. If that’s not good enough for you, go for the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV 53 4Matic+. It produces 625 hp and 950 Nm (with AMG Dynamic Plus 687 hp and 1,000 Nm), has a maximum driving range of 470 km and shoots from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds with the AMG Dynamic Plus Package. Top speed is 220 km/h or, again with the optional package, 240 km/h.

The Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV can be topped up with an AC charger with 11 kW charging power or optionally with 22 kW. Extensive charging times are not yet known at the time of writing, but we do know that you can use a fast charger up to 170 kW charging power. Then you have 170 km of driving range richer in fifteen minutes of charging.

gadgets

As befits a Mercedes-Benz EQ model, the EQE SUV (optional or not) is also full of technical ingenuity. One of the eye catchers is of course the optional MBUX Hyperscreen, which consists of three screens and visually makes the dashboard almost one large screen. If you do not opt for that, then you have a 12.3-inch infotainment screen centrally on the dashboard. A steered rear axle (up to 10 degrees) is also available for the EQE SUV and standard on the AMG versions. Airmatic air suspension is also available again, which allows the car to vary in height by up to 3 cm. Handy, for example, if you want to make it easier to get in and out. The sporty versions also have AMG Ride Control+ and AMG Ride Control with adaptive air dampers. An optional Burmeister audio system allows you to abruptly break the silence in the EQE SUV.

There is also no shortage of driving assistance systems. Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Speed Limit Assist and a reversing camera are standard. An option is adaptive cruise control (Active Distance Assist) that works both on the highway and in the city. Also optional is Blind Spot Assist, which warns you, among other things, with a tug on the steering wheel if you threaten to hit an object in your blind spot and also keeps an eye on the environment in front of you if you are standing still (up to three minutes). Lane Change Assist is also available at an additional cost, as is Evasive Steering Assist that steers you around objects up to a speed of 110 km/h if a collision is otherwise likely unavoidable.
