Mercedes Benz GLS facelift

As big as the Mercedes-Benz is, it has been refined so subtly. This is the facelifted Mercedes-Benz GLS. The brand immediately presents the updated Maybach and AMG versions.

The current Mercedes-Benz GLS was presented four years ago, which means that Mercedes’ largest SUV is far from due for replacement. It is time for a facelift, but don’t expect too many surprises. Just like the GLE recently, Mercedes’ competitor of the BMW X7 and Range Rover is only subtly modernized.

The two thick horizontal slats in the grille of the well-known GLS have been exchanged for four horizontal and significantly thinner ones in the facelifted version. Mercedes-Benz gives the GLS a new front bumper, with a different shape skid plate. Hardly anything changes at the rear, although the connoisseur will undoubtedly see that the rear lights have a new light signature consisting of three blocks. Mercedes-Benz also mounts other alloy wheels.

The interior of the standard GLS with seven seats can be decorated with new leathers and Mercedes-Benz is launching new options to finish the dashboard and door panels, among other things. The slats of the vents of the ventilation system on the sides of the dashboard are now silver-coloured. Mercedes-Benz is of course replacing the MBUX system for the latest generation.

Every GLS – except for the Maybach and AMG versions – now has a 48v mild hybrid powertrain with 20 or 22 hp and 200 or 250 Nm of electrical support. The international delivery range starts with the 381 hp GLS 450 and includes the GLS 580 4Matic with 517 hp, the 269 hp GLS 350 d 4Matic and the GLS 450 d 4Matic with 367 hp. The current GLS is available in the Netherlands as 450, 580, 600, 400d and as Maybach and AMG.

Mercedes Maybach

As the most luxurious variant, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic has, as before, a grille with a whole set of thin vertical slats. Striking is the large black square that now sits in the center of the grille, in which sensors of the many active and passive safety systems are incorporated. More news comes in the form of a different front bumper, complete with Maybach badging in the cooling vents on either side of it. The option list includes new 23-inch ‘manhole cover’ wheels and new paint colours. In the interior we see new seat upholstery, ditto mood lighting and new finishing materials are also available here.

The Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4Matic also returns. This sporty top model has its own light signature at the rear and the Mercedes logo on the nose has been replaced by an AMG badge. It is equipped with new alloy wheels, new interior materials and more extensive standard equipment. Active roll stabilization is standard and further finely tuned.

The GLS 63 4Matic has a 4.0 V8 that kicks it up to 612 hp and 850 Nm and is supported by 22 hp and 250 Nm that the starter-generator adds. The AMG variant reaches 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds. Its top speed is 28o km/h.

Detailed information for the GLS coming to the Netherlands will follow soon.
