Mercedes-Benz outlines top electric sedan EQS

Mercedes-Benz has an armada of electric newcomers in the development chambers and the world will know. Every now and then the brand highlights a detail of its upcoming electric models and this time the focus is on the EQS.

Up to and including 2022, Mercedes-Benz will market not one, not two, but six electric cars. The brand comes with the EQA, the EQB, but also with two electric sedans and two electric SUVs. The EQE will be an electric alternative to the E-Class and will be produced in Bremen in the second half of next year. Although that EQE gets an EQE SUV as a direct sister model, it must really recognize its superior in the EQS and the upcoming EQS SUV. The EQS will see the light of day in Sindelfingen, Germany, from the first half of next year. Mercedes-Benz is now showing a new sketch.

The EQS will be the electric alternative to the S-class. That does not mean that the model is an electric S-class. Both the carriage and the platform underneath are completely new. Mercedes-Benz uses a new modular EV platform for its larger electric models. However, the upcoming EQA and EQB share their basis with existing models, the GLA and GLB respectively. Mercedes-Benz today indicates that it is equipping the EQS with HEPA air filters that must also be able to filter tiny particles from the air. The electric range is more relevant. According to Mercedes-Benz, it will be at ‘more than 700 kilometers (WLTP)’. Like the EQE, the EQS gets an SUV brother: the EQS. That will only come in 2022 and you should actually see how the GLS relates to the S-class.

Once on the market, the EQS doesn’t have the realm of electric top sedans alone for long. BMW is coming with the i7 and Jaguar is turning the new XJ into an electrically powered top sedan. The EQS is optically interspersed with design elements that belong to the EQ label. The appearance therefore shows strong similarities with that of the Vision EQS.
