Naming strategy further overhauled

Mercedes-Benz scraps EQ label

Mercedes-Benz has only had EQ models in its range for a few years, but is already putting the EQ label at the exit. Of course the EVs will remain, but it is said that they will no longer be called EQ from the next generation.

It is now more than six years since Mercedes-Benz created the EQ label with the Generation EQ and more than four years since the first production car with the EQ name appeared in the form of the EQC. That name has not been around for very long and moreover, the EQ party has only really gained steam in the past two years with the EQS, EQE and its SUV brothers. Nevertheless, the end of EQ seems to be in sight. The name then, of course not the electric models.

The German Handelsblatt reports, based on sources within Mercedes-Benz, that electric models from Mercedes-Benz will appear from next year that are not known as EQ. The existing EQs will probably not be renamed, so their successors will be renamed. The reason? Now that the focus is increasingly on electric models, a separate name would no longer be necessary.

The successors of, for example, the EQE and EQS may therefore simply be called E-class and S-class respectively, possibly with a type designation that indicates that the car has an electric powertrain. Yet that is also highly uncertain, because Mercedes-Benz would according to Handelsblatt review its entire nomenclature, not for the first time in this century. From next year it may become clear exactly how the brand approaches it. The compact electric sedan that was recently spotted may already be the first EV that no longer has EQ in its name.
