Wonderful news for fans of large roaring engines: Mercedes-Benz is far from putting its widely used V8 in the garbage.
Mercedes-Benz is electrifying at a rapid pace and now has an EQ model range that extends from the EQA to the EQS. Mercedes-AMG is also participating, because that included an electric motor in the GT 4-Door and the sporty division simultaneously presented the fully electric Mercedes-AMG EQS. We can reassure anyone who fears that the end of the wonderfully raw-sounding 4.0 V8 is in sight. Mercedes says that there really is a future in this.
The M178 block, used for the first time in 2015, will in any case still experience its tenth anniversary and even its fifteenth. This is apparent from the words of Philipp Schiemer in conversation with Road and Track: “I expect we will definitely see the V8 in the next ten years. We have a lot of customers who love the cars and I think they want to buy a V8 for a long time too,” said the CEO of Mercedes’ Top End Vehicle division.
What may disappear sooner is the powertrain in which the V8 has to do it all itself. With the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door 63 S E-Performance (a mouth full), Affalterbach is giving the lead for numerous plug-in hybrid sports cars. According to Schiemer, there is still a bright future for the V8: “…we know that we can do so much more with a powertrain like this.”
