Mercedes-Maybach celebrates that Maybach was founded 100 years ago. It does that with the limited edition ‘Edition 100’ for both the S-class and the GLS.

Although Maybach was founded in 1909, in 1921 the name of co-founder Wilhelm Maybach was used for the first time in the company name. Maybach, previously a manufacturer of engines for zeppelins, subsequently grew into a manufacturer of ultra-luxury passenger cars. This stopped due to the Second World War and from 1960 – when Mercedes-Benz took over Maybach – until 1997 Maybach was again part of the car industry, but still very much in the background. That changed with the arrival of the Maybach 57 and 62, the first cars sold as Maybach since the early 1940s. Today, however, Maybach is only a division of Mercedes, which no longer sells cars as a ‘separate brand’. That should not spoil the fun, because this year it is already 100 years ago that Maybach became a household name in the car industry.

The two models currently on the market with the Maybach name on them, the S-class – the S680 with the V12 – and GLS, are therefore decked out as ‘Edition 100’. Both the S-class and GLS have a special hand-applied two-tone paint scheme consisting of ‘high tech silver’ and ‘nautical blue’. The cars are also on wheels that have a gray tint that has not been used before. On the C-pillar of the S-class and GLS you will not find the standard Maybach logo, but copies with ‘Edition 100’ below. The same logo is on the hub caps. Anyone who gets into one of the two luxury toppers might benefit from sunglasses, because the inside is largely stark white. ‘Designo crystal white’ to be precise, that is the basic color of the leather upholstery, supplemented with ‘silver gray pearle’ accents.

Mercedes-Maybach will build 100 units of the S-class Edition 100 and GLS Edition 100 – you guessed it – per model. Prices are not yet known, but for the ‘normal’ Mercedes-Maybach GLS you do not have to pay less than around €234,000 in the Netherlands. With the Mercedes-Maybach S680 you normally even need more than €310,000.
