Class apart

Just when you thought Max Verstappen couldn’t become more dominant in his Red Bull, the GP of Hungary came. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff takes his hat off in special terms to the team that set a new record yesterday.
With no less than twelve victories in a row, Red Bull set a record in Formula 1 yesterday. Max Verstappen again did so in extremely dominant style, by crossing the finish line first with a margin of almost 34 seconds. Where the Red Bull did not come out so fantastic in qualifying, the RB19 was ‘a rocket’ in the race, according to Verstappen. The stopwatch told a similar story.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff seems to be somewhat despondent about it. Speaking to the assembled media, he summed it up in Hungary in a special way: “We can play nice weather and say that we could have finished second, but that is irrelevant, because you have one car at the front that has a lead of 34 seconds and was probably also cruising. That is the harsh reality.” He compares it to the difference between Formula 1 and Formula 2: “In F2 we were fast, but the F1 car won by 34 seconds.” While it’s hard for Mercedes to see Red Bull doing so well, Wolff does think Red Bull deserves all the credit for how it’s going. “We saw the pace that Max had, that’s where they are. They did the best job, we just have to recognize that.”
