MG 4 Electric – Back to Basics

With the MG 4 Electric, electric driving has become more accessible again. For just over €30,000 you can buy an electric hatchback from MG with a mature range of space and a reasonable driving range – something that you cannot (yet) achieve with another brand. The 4 Electric costs at least €30,785. This is what you get for that amount.

MG 4 Electric Standard, €30,785

To keep the price down, MG chooses to keep the delivery range of the MG 4 Electric extremely clear. When ordering a copy, you even have only two choices: the color and the trim level. This means that MG only needs to be able to build 21 different 4’s Electric: three trim levels in seven colors – and that’s it.

The standard shade is ‘Dover White’, the other six shades (orange, blue, red, black, gray or light grey) increase the starting price to €31,435 and therefore cost €650. For the rest, all points in which different versions of the MG 4 Electric can differ from each other are housed in the three trim levels. Even the powertrain options are related to it. If you want 450 km of driving range (WLTP), then you are dependent on an MG 4 Electric in Comfort or Luxury trim for at least €3,500 extra. The Standard has one range of 350 km.

Specifications

This is because the standard 4 Electric uses a smaller battery pack (51 kWh) than the other two versions (65 kWh). In addition, its electric motor is also less potent: the Standard sends up to 170 hp to its rear wheels, the Comfort and Luxury both 204 hp. However, with a 0-100 time of 7.7 seconds, the slip-on will be smooth enough for most.

Does that also apply to you and is 350 km driving range sufficient? Then for €30,785 – or €31,435, if you like color – you’re done. MG supplies you with a 4 Electric on 16-inch wheels for that money: the only part that distinguishes a Standard from the outside from a Comfort, which is 17-inch. You can also use the Standard DC fast charging up to 117 kW and 1-phase home charging up to 6.6 kW. The car always has adaptive cruise control and some driver assistance systems, such as lane keeping assist. A digital instrument panel and 10-inch infotainment screen (with Apple Carplay and Android Auto) are also standard, as are LED lighting all around, keyless entry, climate control, heated exterior mirrors and a split-folding rear seat.

A step higher you will find the Comfort, which has a starting price of €34,285. For that extra price you mainly buy extra EV capacities, because the standard equipment of the Comfort is – except for the 17-inch wheels – almost the same. The Comfort can charge faster (135 kW), can charge 3-phase at home (11 kW) and therefore has more power and a larger battery.

Standard or Luxury

Larger (outward) differences emerge with the Luxury (€36,285), which has more extensive LED lighting at both the front and rear. In addition, the Luxury has a larger spoiler, which costs it 15 km of driving range. Not only in terms of appearance, but also in terms of facilities, the Luxury differs more from the Comfort than the Comfort from the Standard. Leather upholstery, more autonomous functions, navigation, electrically adjustable front seats, seat and steering wheel heating, automatically folding side mirrors, an automatically dimming interior mirror, a heat pump, a preheatable battery, a 360-degree camera and a wireless charger: it’s all there.

MG4 Electric

You can recognize the topper by this rear light bar and two-part roof spoiler, because only the Luxury has it.

But: it is not all on the Standard and the Comfort. As a result, the delivery range of the MG 4 Electric can be summarized as follows: if you attach little value to modern luxury items such as seat heating and you do not need that much range, go for the Standard. You have more range from the Comfort and that costs relatively much extra, because in terms of price it is already relatively close to the much more complete Luxury – which, with extras such as battery preheating, is also slightly better in terms of EV capacities.

The standard version of the MG 4 is therefore an excellent offer in itself, but at the same time the added value of the more expensive variants is great. The WLTP range of 450 instead of 350 km will make many consider the Comfort or Luxury.
