Competitive?
The MG 4 Electric promises to be a pretty interesting model, especially if the car is also competitively marketed in terms of price. At least that seems to be the case in the UK.
MG is expanding its delivery range in the Netherlands in the fourth quarter of this year with the 4 Electric. The MG 4 Electric is a direct competitor of the Volkswagen ID3 and the Renault Megane E-Tech. Like those models, the MG 4 Electric is a fully electrically powered hatchback that nestles right into the compact middle class. The MG 4 Electric is 4.29 meters long and that makes it about 3 centimeters longer than, for example, its German competitor. MG has now launched the 4 Electric in the UK and is providing interesting new information. We compare these here with specifications of the now well-established Volkswagen ID3.
Technical specifications MG 4 Electric
We now know that the wheelbase of the MG 4 Electric is 2.71 meters. The Volkswagen ID3 has about 6 centimeters more between the front and rear axle. It is also known that the basic version weighs 1,655 kilos and that the Long Range variant with a larger battery pack and more powerful electric motor weighs 1,685 kilos. Then the specifications. The entry-level model has a 51 kWh battery and a 170 hp electric motor on the rear axle. It reaches 100 km/h in just over 7.5 seconds. The top speed is 160 km/h. The range is 350 kilometers. We now also know that this battery pack can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 39 minutes on a 150 kW fast charger.
MG 4 Electric
The MG 4 Electric Long Range will be placed above the base model of the MG 4 Electric. It has a 204-hp electric motor on the rear axle that draws its energy from a larger 64-kWh battery (net: 61.7 kWh). This variant is mainly aimed at the largest possible driving range, because it is slightly less rapid than the entry-level 150 hp. A sprint from standstill to a speed of 100 km/h takes about 7.7 to 8 seconds. The range of the 4 Electric Long Range is about 450 kilometers. With a 150 kW fast charger, the package can be fully charged from 10 to 80 percent of its capacity in 35 minutes. In China, the MG 4 Electric is also available with 449 hp and 600 Nm of electric power …
Prices MG 4 Electric
Although it is not always obvious that a model with a lower number in its name is also positioned among the models with larger numbers in the model name – see Polestar -, that seems to be the case with MG. In the United Kingdom, MG places the 4 Electric neatly a step below the 5 Electric station wagon and also below the ZS EV. The MG 5 Electric costs in the United Kingdom – for the time being only there as a Long Range – converted about €36,800. In the Netherlands, the MG 5 Electric as a Long Range changes owner from €37,585. The MG ZS EV is in the order books in the United Kingdom from around €35,000. In the Netherlands you pay a minimum of €33,585 for the same entry-level version. Of course we cannot translate the price difference between those models in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands one-to-one to the MG 4 Electric, but the Dutch prices do not seem to be far from the English prices.
MG 4 Electric
That is interesting. The cheapest MG 4 Electric with the 51 kWh battery and 170 hp electric motor costs €31,875 in the United Kingdom. Less than the MG ZS EV and MG 5 Electric (Long Range). The cheapest but currently unavailable Pure entry-level version of the Volkswagen ID3 is on the Dutch price list for €33,990. For that amount you get – if available – an electric hatchback with an electric motor of 150 hp and a 45 kWh battery that is good for a driving range of 349 kilometers. Those specifications are therefore quite similar to those of the MG 4 Electric. The MG 4 Electric Long Range with a more powerful electric heart and a larger battery costs €34,440 in the United Kingdom. The Volkswagen ID3 with a comparable powertrain is the 204 hp version with a 58 kWh battery and a driving range of 426 kilometers. It has a starting price of €38,390 in the Netherlands.
Long story short: the MG 4 Electric could just be slightly cheaper in the Netherlands than a more or less comparable motorized Volkswagen ID3.
Equipment MG 4 Electric
Its equipment makes the MG 4 Electric extra interesting. MG provides the base model in the United Kingdom with a 10.25-inch infotainment screen and a 7-inch digital instrumentation as standard. That is also quite similar to the equipment of the Volkswagen ID3 Pure. The 4 Electric also has Traffic Jam Assist on board, which allows you to go about your business semi-autonomously in traffic jams. Smart adaptive cruise control with traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam and an active lane assistant is also standard. With the ID3 you have to pay extra for, among other things, Traffic Jam Assist, also in the Pro and Pro S versions. The 4 Electric also has Vehicle 2 Load (V2L) technology on board as standard, as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and 17-inch alloy wheels as standard equipment.
MG 4 Electric
The MG 4 Electric Long Range has similar standard equipment in the UK to the variant with the weaker powertrain, although it does have an ‘active grille’ that can close at speed to improve aerodynamics. MG is also introducing a richly equipped Trophy version of the 4 Electric Long Range in the United Kingdom. That model has almost everything standard that you normally find on the option list. From blind spot detection to Rear Cross Traffic Alert and from two-tone paint and privacy glass to things like different bumpers, a two-part rear spoiler, black accents, a heated steering wheel and so on.
MG 4 Electric Netherlands
If MG manages to bring the 4 Electric to the market in the Netherlands for slightly less than the comparable Volkswagen ID3s and keeps the relatively rich standard equipment, would you consider the MG 4 Electric?
