MG has a unique model in its range with the 5 Electric: it is the first affordable electric station wagon on the market. It costs more than 33 grand, but in the short tradition of the current MG you get quite a lot in return for that.
MG 5 Electric Standard Range Comfort
€33,485
With the ZS EV, the EHS and the Marvel R, it was already clear that MG usually equips its models quite well as standard. With the MG 5 Electric, the Comfort is the standard range as the basic version. Remarkably enough, the Standard Range has more power with 177 hp than the €3,000 more expensive Long Range Comfort, which has to make do with 156 hp. On the other hand, the Long Range can carry more electricity. The Standard Range has a 50.3 kWh battery, while the Long Range has 60.1 kWh at its disposal. This results in a WLTP range of 320 and 400 kilometers respectively. With an AC charger you can charge the MG 5 Electric with a maximum of 11 kW with power, with a fast charger you can do that up to 87 kW.
Indistinguishable
On the outside, the base model of the MG 5 Electric is only recognizable by its 16-inch alloy wheels. For the rest, the exterior is exactly the same as that of the €1,500 more expensive Luxury, with chrome-plated window frames of the side windows, privacy glass and silver roof rails. LED headlights with light sensor and high-beam assistant and LED taillights are also always present on the MG 5 Electric. For a rain sensor you have to knock on the door of the Luxury. The exterior mirrors are electrically adjustable and heated, but not electrically foldable. You will also have to seek refuge with the more expensive version for this.
The electric MG 5 rolls out of the spray booth in the color Dover White at no extra cost. If you prefer the paint mixers to apply one of the three other colors – Pebble Black, Diamond Red or Medal Silver – on your new MG, you have to pay an additional €650. Furthermore, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and keyless entry are also standard on the electric station wagon. The Luxury can only add a 360-degree camera.
Cup interior
You sit in the MG 5 Electric on cloth seats. Unfortunately, the configurator only shows the leatherette seats of the Luxury. The driver’s seat is also height-adjustable, with an axially adjustable steering wheel wrapped in leather, but the passenger’s seat is fixed in height. Both front seats are heated as standard. Furthermore, the MG 5 Electric has manual air conditioning as Comfort. In addition to the aforementioned artificial leather, the Luxury also includes climate control, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat and an automatically dimming interior mirror. In addition, with the Luxury you can also opt for a gray interior for an extra €1,000. This option is not available on the Comfort.
All digital indulgence is already present on the Comfort. The MG 5 Electric has a 7-inch digital instrumentation and a 10.25-inch digital touchscreen as standard. Navigation is included, as is compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The audio system always has six speakers. The electric station wagon also has four USB ports to charge electrical devices. Incidentally, the MG 5 Electric with Vehicle to Load (V2L) can also charge larger electrical devices outside the car. The MG 5 Electric is pretty slack with its safety systems: adaptive cruise control, an autonomous emergency braking system, traffic sign recognition, lane assistance and a traffic jam assistant are all available at no extra cost.
In short, the Luxury version does offer some extra pampering, but you can also keep that extra €1,500 in your pocket and opt for the Comfort. For its starting price, it is by no means bare equipped. MG does not provide separate options, so it is either all the extras of the Luxury, or the standard equipment.
