MG has a glorious past full of sporty open and closed two-seaters. Even the Rovers transformed into MG that came on the market in the last phase of life of ‘the old MG’ had a sporty character in a certain sense. The current MG range consists mainly of electric SUVs and crossovers. But there is hope on the horizon.
At the beginning of this year, MG presented the Cyberster, a great nod to the more sporty brand history. The Cyberster was electrically powered, but it was a nice open two-seater. MG single-handedly launched a crowdfunding campaign to partly finance the development of the car. The Cyberster would not go into production until sufficient money had been raised, although it was a fraction of the amount normally needed to develop a car. That money would now be in and MG would have pressed the big green approval button. Now the question: is the Cyberster really coming? And when? Speaking to AutoWeek, Matt Lei, CEO of MG Motor Europe gives a clear hint.
MG Cyberstar (2021)
Matt Lei’s response to the question of whether the Cyberster is going into production is best summed up as ‘never say never’, although there is a little more hope on the horizon than you think. “Of course MG has the dream to come up with a dynamic electric car. In 2024 MG will be 100 years old and with the MG5 Electric (ed.: the first electric station wagon in Europe) we are already proving that we are active in segments where no manufacturer has been previously. We won’t say more yet.” More than a clear hint that the Cyberster will appear in production form in 2024.
