Mick Schumacher to F1 team Mercedes-AMG

For a moment, after two years, the Formula 1 career of Michael Schumacher’s son seemed to come to an end, but nothing could be further from the truth: Mick Schumacher will be allowed to work for the Mercedes Formula 1 team next year. Not as one of the two race drivers, but as a reserve and test driver.

Mick Schumacher has so far completed two seasons in Formula 1. Both last year and this season he was one of the two drivers of the Haas F1 team and before that he managed to score points several times. However, the son of the legend did not really excel on the talent-packed F1 grid, so towards the end of last season it looked increasingly likely that he would no longer have a racing seat in 2023. That came true.

Nevertheless, the 23-year-old German remains involved in Formula 1 as a driver, because Mercedes-AMG is pushing him a contract. Schumacher is allowed to work at Mercedes as a reserve driver and test driver. In that role he will also be present at every Formula 1 race next year, although Mick will mainly spend a lot of time in the simulator at Mercedes’ F1 home base in Brackley, England.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has hinted at the recruitment of Schumacher a number of times in recent times, but nothing has been official so far. Mercedes’ race drivers for 2023 were known for a long time with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Schumacher is following in his father’s footsteps in his new role, as Michael also drove in F1 for Mercedes between 2010 and 2012.

It is to be hoped for Mick that he can follow in his father’s footsteps, although he must first regain a permanent position on the grid. Now that he is reserve driver, he is close to the fire. He may – just like Nyck de Vries last year – seize one of the few opportunities to prove himself after all.
