Forgot to check out on public transport? Request your money back in a few steps via Uitcheckgemist.nl.
Forgot to check out
You come home from a trip on public transport and suddenly think: oops, I forgot to check out. Or you cannot check out, because the check-in and check-out terminals at the station, on the bus, tram or metro do not work. Those who do not check out on public transport often have to pay the so-called boarding fee. That can go up to twenty euros. For example, a ride of a few euros suddenly turns out to be considerably more expensive.
Ask for a refund
Were there any additional charges after you forgot to check out? Request the money back via the website Uitcheckgemist.nl. Please note that the journey must first be registered. This can take up to fourteen days after the trip. We go through the steps on a PC, but you can also request a refund on a smartphone or tablet.
- Open the browser and surf to www.uitcheckgemist.nl
- Enter the card number of your OV-chipkaart under ‘Card number’.
- Under ‘Valid until’, select the date the card expires.
- Put a tick in front of I am the rightful holder of this OV chip card and I give permission to show journeys for which I have not checked out.
- click on Next step.
- Enter the departure and arrival stop of the journey for which you want to request a refund. For example from ‘Groningen’ to ‘Meppel’.
- Indicate when you traveled. Was it during rush hour? Then tap the bullet for ‘rush hours’. Was it outside rush hour? Then tap the ball for ‘Off-peak hours’.
- Put a tick in front of I am requesting a refund for this ride.
- click on Request balance back.
The website calculates the cost of the trip. Are they lower than the amount that has been debited? Then you will be refunded the overpaid amount.
Request money back more often
Forgot to check out more often? Travelers can request a refund up to three times per six months (between January and June and between July and December). For the NS, this is possible a maximum of three times per calendar year.
