Bringing classics to life as a retro model: the Mitsubishi Colt
Between Christmas and New Year’s you can look back, look ahead and also dream. At AutoWeek, we always do retro dreams at the end of the year and imagine modern interpretations of historic models. Imagine the Mitsubishi Colt as a retro model. Our illustrator Larson did.
Mitsubishi’s current model range consists of just three models: the Space Star, the Eclipse Cross and the new ASX, which is nothing more than a rebadged Renault Captur. How far has the brand slipped? And to think that Mitsubishi had a very complete model range in the 80s and 90s. The brand often came out inventive and presented very modern techniques for that time.
Early with a PHEV
Mitsubishi had multi-valve engines early on, screwed turbos into all models and applied the renowned Power-Economy lever. Nine years ago, Mitsubishi was early with a PHEV. To reflect emphatically on the manufacturer’s beautiful European past, our draftsman designed a retro version of the popular first Mitsubishi Colt. Speaking of turbos: even that small model there was such a peppery version. So we would like to see a blown power source again; why not such a nice beetle as Toyota has shown in the GR Yaris Hydrogen: a turbo three-cylinder that runs on hydrogen. Can the retro Colt compete nicely in the Super Taikyu class, the Japanese racing class that races on hydrogen.
Big disclaimer: this has all bubbled up in our imagination, but well, once a year is allowed as far as we’re concerned.
