Mobile internet within the EU: these rules apply to your data bundle

If you have a large or unlimited data bundle in the Netherlands, there is often a data limit in other EU countries. Unlimited internet in the Netherlands does not always mean unlimited data abroad. We give you an overview of how it works.

Mobile internet within the EU abroad: you need to know this

How much mobile internet within Europe you are allowed to use per month differs per provider. Do you have a data bundle under 10GB? Then you are at the right place with all providers and you can simply use all your MBs, regardless of which EU country you are in. Only with internet bundles larger than 10GB there are differences between the providers and how much you can actually use up. We will go through them with you below per provider. Handy to check before you go on vacation. Are you going on holiday outside the EU? Then different rules apply. In the article below you can read everything you need to know about the use of mobile internet while on holiday.

Simyo abroad (EU)

The largest data bundle available at Simyo is 8GB. You can use this completely in all EU countries because it remains below the 10GB limit. There are therefore no separate rules to take into account for Simyo users.

Tele2 abroad (EU)

For the bundles of 10GB, 20GB and the Unlimited data bundle, there is a limit of 9GB per month in the EU. It is therefore important to keep a close eye on data usage if you have a subscription with Tele2. If you’re used to unlimited internet or large data bundles, you may quickly run out of that 9GB on vacation. If so, you can buy an extra internet bundle. If you do not buy an extra bundle, you pay separately per MB, minute or SMS. This is often less advantageous than an extra data bundle.

Telfort abroad (EU)

The largest internet bundle at Telfort is 10GB. With all bundles it is possible to use them fully throughout the EU. As with Simyo, there are no separate rules.

T-mobile abroad (EU)

With an unlimited bundle of T-Mobile you have a limit for internet use in the EU. If you are in another EU country, you can use a maximum of 10GB of data per month. Even in the event that you have a data bundle of 10GB but have 2GB extra due to customer benefits – a total of 12GB – you may only use 10GB abroad. Do you not have an internet bundle, but unlimited internet at low speed in the Netherlands? Then with T-mobile you can use 3GB per month in the EU, of course at low speed.

KPN abroad (EU)

When it comes to data usage abroad, KPN has the most attractive conditions. All MBs can be used, regardless of which EU country you are in. This means that even with large bundles, such as 50GB, you don’t have to worry about a data limit when you’re on vacation in Europe.

Always check

Now that you know how much internet you can actually use within the EU, it is always important to check with your provider whether the rules for EU internet actually apply in the country where you are. For example, these EU rules do not yet apply in Norway, Switzerland and Turkey.

Yet many providers also offer the favorable arrangement in these countries. But with T-Mobile, for example, you still pay a foreign rate if you are in Switzerland. It can also sometimes be different for small countries and areas such as Monaco, Gibraltar and Andorra. Always check with your provider what the rules are for your destination before you go on holiday to such countries.

On land, at sea or in the air

Are you about to sail a cruise, is your plane taking off to return to the Netherlands or are you on a sailing holiday? At sea and in the air, the EU rules do not apply. On international waters, your phone connects to a satellite via the ship. The costs for internet use can then increase enormously, because the rates for this are always high. Turn off roaming when you take the ferry between two EU countries, for example.
