‘More car manufacturers are going to develop their own chips’

More and more large car manufacturers are developing their own computer chips to ensure a stable supply of semiconductors. That is according to the American research firm Gartner. Stellantis announced on Tuesday that it will do this together with Foxconn.

The global auto industry has been struggling with dire shortages of chips for some time now, severely disrupting production. By making their own chips, car companies can overcome those delivery problems. According to Gartner, half of the top ten auto companies in the world are likely to start developing their own chips by 2025. According to the researchers, the transition to electric driving also plays a role, because more specialized chips are needed for electric cars, just as due to the increasing digitization of cars.

Earlier in the day, car group Stellantis, parent company of brands such as Opel, Fiat, Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Alfa Romeo, Jeep and Chrysler, announced a partnership with Taiwanese Foxconn for the joint production of chips. These chips should be installed in Stellaantis cars from 2024 and also be offered to other car manufacturers. According to the group, this cooperation will bring more stability to the supply of semiconductors. The German Volkswagen would also have plans to develop its own chips, including for self-driving cars. American industry peers Ford Motor and General Motors (GM) are also considering producing chips in-house.
