More than in 2021, but significantly less than in 2019
The Dutch government collected more fuel excise and MRB in 2021 than in the previous year. This is evident from figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), which has mapped out how much environmental tax has flowed to the state coffers in 2021.
Last year, a total of €23.2 billion was collected in environmental taxes in the Netherlands, one billion more than in 2020. The increased revenue from fuel excise duties is partly responsible for this increase. In 2021, €7.66 billion in fuel excise duties was collected in the Netherlands, €291 million more than a year earlier. In addition, MRB income also increased last year compared to the previous year, by €104 million to €6.03 billion. At €1.48 billion, bpm revenue in 2021 remained virtually the same as in 2021 (€1.5 billion).
According to Statistics Netherlands, the increased fuel excise revenue is not only the result of the inflation correction, but mainly due to an increase in the number of kilometers driven compared to the first corona year 2020. We compare the fuel excise revenue in 2021 with that of the pre-corona year 2019, then there is a big difference. In 2019, €8.46 billion in fuel excise duties was collected, almost €800 million more than in 2021. The fact that more motor vehicle tax (MRB) was paid last year is not only due to the inflation correction, but also due to the growing Dutch vehicle fleet.
Although the bpm revenue in 2021 was almost equal to that of 2020, it also lagged considerably behind that of the pre-corona year 2019. In that year, €2.34 billion, €863 million more bpm was paid than in 2021.
