Bounce back after corona years
More driving licenses will be issued in 2022 than in previous years. The growth can of course be partly explained by the dip in the corona years, but the number also increased compared to 2019.
Last year, 223,034 people obtained their driving license. A significant increase compared to 2021 (181,552) and 2020 (163,927). This is reported by the Central Office for the Issuance of Driving Skills Certificates (CBR) on the basis of the annual figures. The dip in the previous years is explained by the CBR due to the corona measures, as a result of which both exams and driving lessons came to a standstill for a while. The figures are now again comparable to before corona. In 2019, for example, more than 219,000 people obtained their driving license. The largest age group that obtained a driving license last year were 18-year-olds, there were 62,243.
The CBR took more than a million theory exams last year, partly to clear the backlog that had arisen due to the corona measures. That backlog has been cleared, but it will take some time for the practical exams, the CBR expects. “We were able to open up our locations extra for the theory exams, which are taken in halls. Practical exams, however, are taken one-on-one. By working overtime, pensioners continuing to work and also training new examiners, we create additional opportunities. In addition, colleagues from quieter regions deployed in areas, especially the Randstad, where the reservation periods are longer,” said a spokesman for the CBR.
