It’s going fast

More than 20 percent subsidy for used electric cars has already been granted

In just over a month, more than a fifth of the subsidy pot intended to make the purchase of a used electric car more attractive has already been forgiven. This and more is evident from an analysis by AutoWeek of the figures from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).

For some time now, the SEPP subsidy pot that is intended to support the purchase or private lease of a second-hand electric car with an original catalog value (tax price) of up to €45,000 has been emptied considerably faster than the pot with which the government supports the purchase of new EVs (up to €45,000) wants to boost. On Tuesday, January 9, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) opened the subsidy counters, and almost a month later, a fifth of the subsidy budget created for used EVs has already been allocated.

Of the €29.4 million subsidy budget made available this year for the purchase or private lease of a used electric car, €6.43 million has already been allocated after just over a month. That is 22 percent of the total, more than a fifth. A subsidy has been applied for for 3,215 used electric cars. There is still €22.97 million available, good for 11,485 second-hand electric cars. You can receive a compensation of €2,000 on the purchase of a used EV.

Last year, the Renault Zoe was the second-hand electric car for which SEPP subsidy was most often applied for. The Nissan Leaf and Volkswagen e-Golf also topped the list in 2023 for consumers looking for a second-hand EV.

New electric cars

It is now a well-known story: the subsidy pot intended for the purchase of a new electric car (up to €45,000) is emptied considerably less quickly than the pot designed for used EVs. Of the €58 million made available at the beginning of this year, €4.54 million has been allocated at the time of writing. Just under 8 percent. Subsidy has been requested for 1,539 new EVs. There is still €53.46 million available, good for 18,122 new electric cars. You can look forward to a financial incentive of €2,950 on the purchase or private lease of a new electric car.
