More than one in five passenger cars sold new in the Netherlands last year was fully electric. This is evident from figures released by Bovag and RDC today.
Last year, a total of 356,051 new passenger cars were sold on the Dutch counters, as it turned out on the first day of this farm-fresh year. ‘About 70,000’ of these were fully electric, but now we also know exactly how many there were. In 2020, a total of 73,057 new electric passenger cars were registered, which means that the market share of electric cars in our country was more than 20.5 percent last year. More than one in five passenger cars registered last year was therefore an EV. Last year, 61,547 EVs were registered.
Not all EVs were registered in the name of a private individual, as in the whole of 2020 it will be over 7,500 copies. 9,500 units ended up at the door of a Dutch consumer via a private lease construction, while 13,500 units were registered in the name of car companies. Leasing companies registered nearly 33,000 new EVs in 2020. Just like last year, there was another run on EVs in December. In the last month of 2020, 69 percent of all newly registered passenger cars were EVs. The purchase subsidy for EVs, the fact that the addition for electric cars has increased from 8 to 12 percent and the generally collapsed car market can be held responsible for, among other things, the advance of the fierce advance of electric models in 2020.

In 2019, cars with a gasoline engine still accounted for a market share of 71 percent, in 2020 that percentage was 57.6 percent. Also, considerably fewer cars with a diesel engine were purchased last year. 12,983 new diesels were registered in 2020, which means that the market share halved from 7.3 percent in 2019 to 3.6 percent in 2020. Hybrids accounted for 62,560 new registrations, ten percent more than in 2019. More cars were also registered. sold which, in addition to petrol, also like LPG: 2,036 units in 2020 against 520 in 2019. The LPG supply of Renault and Dacia plays a role here. A total of 147 cars with a fuel cell were sold, compared to 9 more last year.
