More than three in ten new cars in the Netherlands are electric

More than 30 percent of all new passenger cars registered in the Netherlands in 2023 were EVs. This means that the share of electric cars in new car registrations has increased significantly compared to 2022.
Of the almost 370,000 new passenger cars delivered in the Netherlands in 2023, no less than 30.8 percent were fully electric. This means that more than three in ten registered cars last year were EVs. In 2021, electric cars still accounted for a market share of 19.8 percent in the Netherlands, in 2022 the share of EVs was 23.5 percent. The share of electric cars in total registrations was therefore 7.3 percentage points higher in 2023 than a year earlier. Don’t forget that many cars were delivered in 2023 that were ordered in 2022.
The majority of passenger cars registered in the Netherlands would still have a combustion engine in 2023. More than 69 percent of the cars that received a license plate in 2023 had a petrol or diesel engine under the hood. Traditional petrol cars accounted for a market share of 30.4 percent in 2023 and 37.1 percent had a hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrain. The diesel market has been in decline for some time now, so the market share of only 1.1 percent for diesel cars is not very surprising.
