Motor vehicle tax in six provinces up: this is how much road tax you pay now

Six provinces have increased the motor vehicle tax as of 1 January, Statistics Netherlands reported. These are Flevoland, Gelderland, Groningen, North Brabant, Utrecht and South Holland. This is how much road tax you now pay on average in each province.

You should not think that Flevoland, Gelderland, Groningen, North Brabant, Utrecht and South Holland have increased the road tax by huge amounts. In five provinces the motor vehicle tax will rise by less than 1.5 percent. Utrecht is adding an extra 3.5 percent. Zeeland is the only province that has lowered the rate by no less than 7.6 percent.

You pay motor vehicle tax to the state and the province. The part that goes to the province is the surcharge. These have been increased by six provinces as of 1 January. The most expensive provinces for car owners are Groningen (640 euros per year for a petrol car), Drenthe (636 euros), South Holland and Gelderland (both 632 euros). North Holland is the cheapest (568 euros).

This is how much road tax you pay per province

The quarterly amounts below are based on a car with a car weight of 1200 kilos. You do not pay road tax for an electric car. A plug-in hybrid gets a 50 percent discount.

  • Drenthe – petrol: 159 euros – diesel: 325 euros
  • South Holland – petrol: 158 euros – diesel: 325 euros
  • Gelderland – petrol: 158 euros – diesel: 324 euros
  • Friesland – petrol: 155 euros – diesel: 322 euros
  • Zeeland – petrol: 152 euros – diesel: 318 euros
  • Flevoland – petrol: 152 euros – diesel: 318 euros
  • Overijssel – petrol: 150 euros – diesel: 317 euros
  • North Brabant – petrol: 150 euros – diesel: 317 euros
  • Limburg – petrol: 149 euros – diesel: 315 euros
  • Utrecht – petrol: 149 euros – diesel: 315 euros
  • North Holland: 142 euros – diesel: 309 euros
