Tesla has built a so-called Gigafactory in Berlin where not a single car is still being produced. That will probably change in November. CEO Elon Musk hopes to eventually be able to build about 10,000 cars every week.
Due to legal wrangling between Tesla and environmental organizations, not a single Model Y intended for the European market has seen the light of day in Tesla’s German Gigafactory. Automotive News writes that CEO Elon Musk hopes to have a full green light to build cars in the factory within a few weeks. That would mean that ‘Gigafactory Berlin’ will probably officially open its gates in November. Elon Musk says that initially about 5,000 cars will leave the factory gates every week, although Musk says he hopes that there will eventually be about 10,000.
Tesla will produce the Model Y for the European market in Berlin. Until Tesla opens its own battery factory in Germany, the brand will probably get the necessary batteries for the Models Y to be built from China, according to Musk. The first Tesla Model Y delivered in Europe are therefore not produced in Germany, but come from China.
