Mysterious BMW spotted

A set of photos has appeared on Instagram of a hitherto unknown compact BMW. Given the clearly sporty approach of the model, it could just be the new 2-series Coupé, but there are more options.

The photos come from the unsurpassed Wilco Blok, who is often good for a scoop. Wilco was sent the photos by an unknown follower who left nothing further. It is clear that the images were made at BMW. Given the sporty elements – spoiler, exhausts, diffuser, thick bumpers – the 2 Series CoupĂ© is a logical first thought for many. After the 2-series Gran CoupĂ©, enthusiasts have to wait for a new two-door “2”, which, unlike its five-door brother, will still have rear-wheel drive and six-in-line engines.

It is a pity that the car can no longer be viewed on the side, because the length of the front overhang says a lot about this car. In front-wheel drive, UKL platform-based models, the overhang is typically a lot bigger than rear-wheel drive, although the rear-wheel drive Z4 is the exception.

In theory, it could also be a sedan version of the new 1-series. That car can then be used in Europe next to the 2-series Gran Coupé like the Mercedes-Benz A-class Limousine next to the CLA. At the moment there is also such a 1-series sedan, although only for the Chinese market.

Given the German license plates and the apparently sporty character, a new two-door 2-series seems to be the best option. The rather traditional design also fits well with such a car, which after all will mainly appeal to traditional enthusiasts. The front has a more quiet design than the 2-series Gran Coupé, especially around the grille. Its sharply lined, optically connected rear light section makes way for a set of rounded, more easily digestible light units.
