More than 80 percent for speeding
Nearly 3 million traffic fines were handed out in the Netherlands between May and August. A huge number, but slightly fewer than in the same months last year. Entirely in line with expectations, most traffic fines have been imposed for speeding.
In the second tertial of 2022 (May, June, July and August), 2,937,812 traffic fines were issued in the Netherlands, according to the most recent figures. That number is 1 percent lower than in the same period last year. At that time, 2,977,737 traffic fines were handed out.
The vast majority of traffic fines were imposed for exceeding the permitted speed limit. In the second quarter of this year, there were 2,370,783 speeding fines, about 81 percent of the total. In the same period last year, more than 2.5 million fines were imposed for speeding. Of the 2.37 million speeding violations, 1.06 million were detected by a speed camera, 786,637 by a section control and 420,829 by a mobile radar. Fewer speed violations have been detected, particularly as a result of section checks. This is probably because people have become accustomed to the section control systems that have been active on N-roads since 2020 and 2021, the government reports.
The increase in the number of fines handed out for telephone use while driving is striking. While last year 47,438 received a voucher for using the phone behind the wheel in the second quarter, that number is almost a third higher in the second quarter of this year with 66,150 people. By the way, it’s not just about using the phone in the car. 21,029 of the 66,150 fines issued for telephone use went to cyclists. More traffic fines have also been sent to foreign drivers. Between May and August, there were 358,108 fines. Last year there were 330,867 in the same period.
