Never miss a transfer again thanks to Google Maps: that’s how you do it

Google Maps will help you never miss a transfer by train. 3D Touch will also get a new function and the search giant will introduce the Local Guides widget.

Google Maps helps with switching

Most journeys you make consist of several steps. You leave home, get on the bus or metro to the station and then continue by train. You switch once and ride your bike to work. Google Maps plans all these steps for you, but from today the maps app will also ensure that you do not forget to switch.

With the new transfer notifications, a notification appears on the screen when it is time to change means of transport. Handy for the times when you board the metro in an unfamiliar city, and you don’t know exactly where and when to change lines.

Here’s how the Google Maps switch reminder works:

  1. Open Google Maps and plan a route by public transport;
  2. Scroll down and tap ‘Add a Google Maps Reminder’;
  3. Set the switch behind ‘Reminder when to switch’ to blue.

The new widget is specifically designed to highlight the Local Guides feature of Google Maps. With this, Google hopes to encourage people to leave reviews of places they’ve been. Uploading photos and videos also counts.

Collect discounts with Local Guides

For every action you perform as a Local Guide you get points, which increase your levels. If you reach a high enough level, Google will give you a discount on Google Play Music, movies in the Play Store and more.

Finally, Google Maps supports 3D Touch, which gives you a preview of the next window by pressing firmly on the screen. This only works on the iPhone 6S and above. The update is available to everyone.
